Last year we had a lot of lockdowns as governments wanted to stop the spread of COVID19. In Victoria we had a longer (and tougher) lockdown. As of now there are still lockdowns going on all over the world. As such it is estimated that alcohol consumption went up. As part of Self care month we want to talk about how to stop binge drinking habits.
The Australian Health and Welfare Institute reported that there was an increase in alcohol consumption but a decrease in spending during the months of April to November 2020. This is because people stockpiled on alcohol during March when they think that the bottle shops will close. But during all the lockdowns the bottle shops stayed open. They did this because they were bored at home.
What devastating effects can too much alcohol have on you?
Over time it can cause:
- Obesity
- Memory loss
- Lots more violence and self harm
- Liver failure
- More anxiety
- Sleep problems for some people
- Alcohol dependence
- Hallucinations
- Slurred speech
- Blackouts
Some self care tips for quitting alcohol
- Spend some time in nature. Nature keeps us happy. As part of lockdown restrictions we are allowed to go outside but do follow Government restrictions
- Do eat a healthy diet
- Do other things other than drink alcohol. For example learn something new
- Have a few days which are alcohol free. Or you can do Dry July.
- If you want to have alcohol do have it with food so that you won’t drink on an empty stomach.
